Go back to names list

Maddy was originally the pet form of the popular feminine name Madeline, but is now found used as a name in its own right. Madeline is a feminine name of Hebrew origin, and in its original form it can be found as Magdalene which means ‘From Magdala’, the name of a town which was the birthplace of Saint Mary Magdalene. The usual form in England became Madeline in the 12th century when it was bought over from France.
