The Belgian Office for Statistics has released information on baby names in Brussels and wider Belgium from last year.

The main highlight of the list is that Arabic names have made a real impression.

Mohamed was the most popular name in the city, with others such as Amin, Ayub, Mehdi, Aya, Yasmine and Salma also turning up in the top 20.   Nationwide, Mohamed came in 7th behind very popular names like Lucas, Nathan and Noah.

Some amusing names came up on the list too:

That’s right, a girl called Man.

The top baby names in Wales this year have been released in research published yesterday.

Top Boys Names in Wales 2008

• Isaac
• Rhys
• Kian
• Dominic

Top Girls Names in Wales 2008

• Zoe
• Mollie
• Millie
• Carys

However, experts in Wales predicted in the same year that made-up names such as Princess Tiaamii – typified by celebrity couples like Jordan and Peter Andre – would become more common in years to come, and that parents would continue to adapt the spelling of everyday names like Amy and Jamie to ensure their children stood out from the crowd.

Sarah Palin, Republican Vice Presidential Nominee (aka bulldog in lipstick) and her daughter, Bristol, who is 5 months pregnant, have been mulling over baby names. Some of those that cropped up were pretty unique:

• Alaska (or maybe this is a boy’s name?)
• Jetta
• Tungsten
• SoCo (I’ve never heard of this before but Bristol says it has some kind of special meaning to her and Levi, maybe it’s a fancy restaurant where they went on their first date or something)
• Lynx
• Pelican
• Opalyn
• Cialis (Bristol just made this one up! isn’t it pretty? She’s so creative.)

BOY NAMES

• Pelt
• Talon (or maybe this is a girl’s name?)
• Ronald Reagan (Mr. mccain is pushing pretty hard for this one)
• Wrangler
• Exxon (this one is sort of a family name)
• Buck
• Bullet (I like this one but there are already so many kids in Alaska named this, and I think he should have a name that’s a little more unusual).
• Gunner
• Grinder
