Ever since Beyoncé announced her pregnancy at the MTV Video Music Awards, speculation has been ripe over what name she will choose for her baby. The star gave birth on Saturday 9th January in Roosevelt hospital by C section and announced the baby’s name as Blue Ivy Carter. This mix of traditional and modern is a nice touch by the parents and there’s no doubt that we’ll be seeing many more babies being named ‘Blue’ throughout the year. That’s not to say that it’s entirely original already, however, as Edge from U2 also has a daughter named Blue Angel and Geri Haliwell’s Bluebell was born far before Blue Ivy was a twinkle in Beyoncé’s eye.

If you say it enough times, ‘Blue’ does start to get a nice ring to it. It has connotations of the bluebell flowers or a rich, midnight blue colour. But what do you think of the star’s choice? Surely it’s better than ‘Apple’ or ‘Egypt’? As Beyoncé’s friends’ children, those are possible future play-date pals of baby Blue, so perhaps she will fit right in after all.
I actually rather like the name Blue, and think it is a sober choice for Beyoncé and Jay-Z considering some celebrity baby names. Take Pete Wentz and Ashlee Simpson’s child for example, Bronx Mowgli Wentz. Perhaps it’s the over-use of the last letters of the alphabet, or just the awkward way it sounds, but we have a feeling Master Wentz may opt to go by his initials or just ‘Bronx’ when he’s older.

So will there be lots of Blues out there from now on? Or is this just the start of a craze of babies named after colours? I like Green myself but it doesn’t seem to have the same ring to it. Maybe it’s because I’m not a celebrity. For now, I’ll wait until someone else does it first and copy them later. Perhaps model Molly Sims will be the next one to name her baby something unusual? The multi talented actress confirmed her pregnancy on January 10th and is said to be thrilled.

After a brief fling with Chinese actress Tinglan Hong, Hugh Grant is now the proud father of a baby girl. The fling was so brief that her neighbours had no idea that she was even pregnant, let alone with Grant’s daughter. Obviously the next most important step is the baby name, and Grant and Hong decided that they would name their new baby girl Jessica. It’s interesting that in this age of unique baby names such a high profile actor has gone for a classic baby name such as Jessica. Only recently we’ve talked about the various names that celebrities and people have chosen to name their baby, from the wild and wacky to the crazy.

For Hugh Grant to choose such a classic baby name perhaps sets a new precedent. With many commentators believing that we will now begin to choose our baby names from our favourite novels or plays, perhaps Grant has forced the issue on change, and we’ll now be choosing some of the old classics again. So next year Jessica might become even more popular, or how about Jane, Lewis or Michael? I suppose it isn’t too shocking that Grant would choose such a name, he is your quintessential British man, and for him to choose anything out of the ordinary would probably have come as a complete shock to us! The great thing about choosing Jessica as a baby name is it shows he is still deeply rooted in his traditions, and that is not necessarily bad!

Tracking the trends of baby names is interesting, and there is no doubt that Hugh Grant’s choice will definitely influence baby names over the next few months. So perhaps some of the more unusual names will take a back seat in early 2012.

There’s no secret to it, everyone loves hearing stories about celebrities, even the people who moan about it like having something to moan about! So what better to talk about that a recent celebrity pregnancy story that is bound to cause a bust up, and with baby names central to whole story.

Kim Kardashian is on course to have a huge problem with her sister Khloe, and it is all to do with baby names. Kim has recently been married to Kris Humphries, and the only thing missing in their apparent perfect relationship has to be a child. Unfortunately for Kim, it is no secret that her sister, Khloe, is also planning to have a child with her husband of two years Lamar Odom. Odom plays for LA Lakers and he has pledged to put a stop to the crazy K tradition. It is rumoured that if they have a boy it will be called Luke Joseph, but Khloe is trying to force her beliefs on husband Lamar by demanding that any baby girl is called Kayla or Kristina! No doubt the baby name argument is going to be raging in this household for many weeks!

Kim, whilst only being married for a few weeks, is already apparently looking at baby names and considering conceiving with her new husband Kris. It is no secret that Kim stopped taking birth control a while ago, and that the two are trying for a child. There is no doubt that the two sisters will be competing to see who can have a child first, and Kim has been looking at baby names, and who is to say that Kim and Kris wont have another K to add to the family.

Whilst Khloe and Kim are trying for a baby, they shouldn’t get complacent, because younger sister Kourtney is also apparently looking to have another child! So we might just see a big increase in the popularity of baby names beginning with K over the next 12 months!

It has finally happened, the world is going to witness the pregnancy of Beyoncé. She announced her news at the MTV VMA awards last week, and since then the rumour mill has gone into overdrive as to what Beyoncé and Jay-Z will call their baby. It is unknown when the baby will be born, but that does not stop us speculating! How often do we get the chance to discuss the baby of two superstars, and whilst this baby will be news for most of its young life, there is no doubt that this is the chance for commentators and the general public to speculate!

So what can Jay-Z and Beyoncé call their baby? Well we have had a hint before from Jay, in his song ‘Hello Brooklyn 2.0’ Jay raps: “If we have a daughter/guess what I’m gon call her/Brooklyn Carter”. Although David and Victoria Beckham might question the fact that they named their first born son Brooklyn as well! Or perhaps as a nod to her fellow group members, a daughter might be called Destiny?

This all being said, Jay-Z and Beyoncé may have a baby boy, and this opens up more possible names. Perhaps Jay will name his son after himself, and so is born Shawn Carter, as the majority of the public only know him as Jay-Z this might not be too much of a surprise. Perhaps we may also see, as a nod to both Beyoncé’s and Jay-Z’s performances at Glastonbury, them naming their son Michael. Michael Eavis, the organiser of Glastonbury Festival, is a friend of both artists, and it is widely known how happy Beyoncé was performing at this year’s festival. Whatever the two superstars use as their baby name there is no doubt that this baby will be in the headlines for many years to come!

After the birth of their fourth child on Sunday 14th July, David and Victoria Beckham have had the pleasure of giving birth of a baby girl. Harper Seven Beckham was born in Los Angeles, California, and immediately became the subject of mass press hysteria.

There had been huge speculation over the name that the Beckham’s would give to their new born girl, with the name of Beckham’s mother, Sandra, an early front-runner with the bookies. Following the trend of the Beckham’s to name their children with slightly unusual names they settled on Harper Seven. Debate will rage over why Harper was chosen, but Seven is easier to explain. David Beckham had great success as a player for both Man Utd and England wearing the number seven shirt; and with Harper Seven being born around 7am and in the seventh month of the year there is no doubt that this had a huge bearing on her name.

The press will surround the Beckham’s for months following the birth of Harper Seven, and being born into such a family will see her gaining press attention for the rest of her life. Currently the debate will rage over her name, and why the Beckham’s have chosen to continue the trend for bizarre baby names. Despite this there is sure to be a rise in the trend for both Harper as a name, and also numbers being involved somewhere in the naming process.

Premier League footballer Peter Crouch and his girlfriend Abbey Clancy have recently had the pleasure of giving birth to a baby girl. Unlike the hysteria surrounding Victoria Beckham’s recent pregnancy news, this has gone slightly under the radar, and the baby name they choose for their girl is Sophia Ruby. Slightly going against the trend of celebrities choosing outlandish names for their new-borns, the parents are said to be ‘over the moon’ with the birth of their first child.

Whilst Peter Crouch and Clancy have bucked the trend of unusual baby names for their first child, stating they chose the names because they ‘liked them’, the coverage that the baby will face in newspapers and magazines will no doubt lead to just as much pressure on Crouch and Clancy as any other new parent who is in the media spotlight. The fact that the two parents have chosen such a normal baby name will surely lead to a strong shift in public choosing of baby names into something that people would consider as being ‘normal’.

With Crouch away on England duty this weekend, Clancy will have plenty of time to bond with her new baby, and with the close season of the Premier League coming very shortly the new parents will have months to care for their new child and time for the debate to begin over the baby name of Crouch and Clancy’s child Sophia Ruby.

Recent findings has actually found the first time parents are finding it very difficult to agree on a name from a list that they have both put together. With so much choice available on sites like ours who can blame them!

Miranda and Orlando got married in the previous year and quickly after just a month or two announced that Miranda was pregnant.

The news was followed with Orlando’s mother saying “They are both absolutely ecstatic. I am beyond happy. They have a list of names and he tells me they are struggling to choose one.”

Remember we wrote a post about a mum letting Facebook users choose the name of her baby? Well she had it and true to her word she allowed Facebook to decide her baby’s fate.

Around 20 thousand people took part in the online Facebook vote to choose a name for mother Alphinelli’s baby girl. This was all set up by a Toronto based social commerce site.

After Alphinelli went into labour on the Tuesday, it was reported that the votes on the page started to go crazy as people were realising this was their last chance to vote. The results are now in and taking first place was the name Melania which managed to accumulate 2862 votes closely followed by Aria with 2853 votes. It crazy to think there were only 10 votes in it!

A few crazy names made the list like Grason and Onyx however Alphinelli let slip that she had been hoping to the name Melania to come through ever since it was suggested.

“I love it,” said Alpinelli. “There’s something different about it. It’s very pretty. It’s feminine, but strong for when she gets older.”

Nick Cannon and Mariah have been reported to have potentially picked out an absolutely horrible name for their baby to be. When talking to E Online Nick said that they had been thinking about calling their child “Cleophis”. Which would make him Cleophis Cannon, however we have to admit, he probably was joking!

He said to E Online “We always picked out a few names. From the day we met, we picked out names…because ironically we had the same last initial—Carey and Cannon. So what name…just having fun…what names would go good?”

He explained later that the couple would not be revealing the name of their baby just yet, so touch wood they were joking. He said: “We picked them out, so we are sticking to it. So far, so far,” he revealed. “I heard they tend to change. I heard you never let anyone know the name. People start to weigh in on it and I heard that, you know, once it actually happens, the name…”

Well they wouldn’t be the first celebrity couple to name their baby something crazy however not what we would expect from Mariah Carey.

Rommy Alpinelli has come up with hundreds of first names to call her soon to be born little girl however she is not the one who is able to pick which one. She has opted to allow facebook users to have the privilege by voting for their favourite.

The little girls due date is December 4th and until then her name is completely in the hands of Facebook online votes. The reason why this is the case is because as her recent spot as a supply teacher, she looked through lists of children’s names, went through numerous baby name books but nothing really jumped out.

It actually came about after Rommy was talking about her problem with her friend from FabFind who worked in the sales department there. It is a Canadian social commerce site that offers discount deals on anything you can imagine.

“We went back to her and said, ‘Here’s what we’ll do: We will give you and your family a year’s worth of free deals if you let us help name your kid, and we’ll do it on Facebook,”‘ said FabFind CEO Bill Heilmann.

It moved from there. As of last Friday the poll had had over 700 votes and the top name was Aria followed by Melania and then Sophia took third place.

It will be interesting to see how the plays out. Would you let your baby’s name to get decided on facebook?
