Bethan is a feminine name which comes from two origins. It can be seen as a short form of both Bethany, and also Elizabeth, though as a short form of the latter it is mainly confined in use to Wales. Bethan has since been used as a name in its own right however. Bethany is a name of Hebrew origin, and was the name of a village in the New Testament. Elizabeth is also of Hebrew origin and is said to mean ‘God has Promised’. As the meaning of Bethany is only a historical reference, we can take the meaning of Bethan to be the same as that of Elizabeth.
