The Hebrew meaning of Mary is said to be ‘Star of the Sea’. Marisa could be pronounced in two ways, mar-EES-ah or mah-RIS-ah. The spelling Marissa has an emphasis on the ‘s’ sound and so is more commonly pronounced as the latter, therefore Marisa is probably distinguished as the former pronunciation.
