Winifred is an Anglicisation of the old Celtic Welsh name Gwenfrewi, which is said to mean ‘Blessed with Peace’. Winifred is used as a name for both boys and girls, as is the pet form, although nowadays Winnie is found mainly as a feminine name. An increase in popularity may be due to A.A. Milne’s loveable bear, Winnie-the-Pooh.
