Vanesa is a spelling variant of the more usual Vanessa which is a feminine name of intereting coinage. It is said to have been invented by the writer Jonathan Swift, who coined it for his pupil Esther Vanhomrigh. He combined the ‘Van’ from her surname with ‘Essa’ which is a nickname from Esther.
