Celebrities with Rare Names

We’re always talking about how celebrities give their babies unusual names, but what about the celebrities themselves? While there is Brad Pitt, George Clooney, Julia Roberts and Susan Sarandon, there are also a few celebs out there with pretty unique names. Check out our list below!

Cobie Smulders

Most famous for being Robin Scherbatsky in “How I Met Your Mother” and Maria Hill in the Marvel movies, Cobie Smulders’ name is one of the more unusual ones in Hollywood. In an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, she explained that she was named after her great-aunt on her father’s side, whose name is Jacoba – hence, shortened to Cobie.

Lake Bell

Lake Bell is an American actress who has made a name in various commercial films throughout her career. While her name is unusual (when one thinks of a lake, most people think of a large body of water surrounded by land), it has probably made her stand out in the competitive film industry. Her good looks certainly gives her a leg up as well!

January Jones

May and June are common girl names based on months, but people rarely choose to name their daughter January. That’s not the case with January Jones, however, who is known for playing Don Draper’s wife, Betty in “Mad Men”. She was named after January Wayne, a character from Jacqueline Susann’s novel, “Once is Not Enough”. Her name also fits in with her family theme, as her sisters are called Jacey and Jina.

Wentworth Miller

Wentworth Miller is an American actor most famous for his role as Michael Scofield in “Prison Break”. Wentworth is more common as a surname and most likely from the Old English words ‘wintra’ meaning “winter” and ‘worð’ meaning “enclosure”.

Shia LaBeouf

Not only is his first name rare, but his last name is also an unusual one – LaBeouf means “beef” in French. Having started his career in the Disney Channel (as Louis Stevens in “Even Stevens”), Shia LaBeouf soon moved onto more serious and increasingly strange projects. Shia has Hebrew roots and the name means “gift of God”, but it is not a very common name.

Channing Tatum

Channing Tatum is an American actor who is famous for his dance moves – his career started with his breakthrough role in the 2006 dance film, “Step Up”. The name Channing is more common as a surname and has English roots, although the meaning is uncertain. This makes sense, as Channing Tatum has English ancestry.
