About Meghan

Go back to names list

Meghan is a spelling variation of the more usual Megan. Both are feminine names that came from Wales where they were used as elongated version of Meg, which is a pet name for Margaret. Margaret comes from the Latin ‘margarita’ which means ‘pearl’. Ancient Persians thought that pearls were formed when oysters came to the water’s surface to look at the moon, and a drop of dew formed in their shells which was turned to pearl by the moons beams. This romantic story has given the meaning ‘Lights Creation’ to the names. Megan is a very popular name in English speaking countries, however the variant Meghan is the more common spelling of the name in America and Australia.
