Blythe is a variant of Blithe which is a name that can be used for both boys and girls. The name comes from Old English origin, from the word ‘blithe’ meaning ‘joyful’, as seen in much Old English poetry such as Shelley’s ‘To a Skylark’ as in ‘Hail to thee blithe spirit’. It was originally used as a nickname for such a person, and would later have become a surname when these became compulsorily. Like many surnames it later became adapted as a forename.
