About Burt Lancaster

Go back to names list

Burton Stephen “Burt” Lancaster (1913-1994) was an American film actor famous for “Elmer Gantry”, “The Birdman of Alcatraz” and “From Here to Eternity”. Noted for his athletic physique, blue eyes and distinctive smile (which was known as “The Grin), he built his career initially on “tough guy” roles and later abandoned his all-American image for more complex and challenging parts. Burt is the short form of Burton, an Old English place name meaning “fortified town”.
