This town is famous for its weaving and the paisley pattern which is a very popular fabric pattern using Persian inspired shapes and colours, and a specifically shaped swirl. Its use as a name could have happened in two ways. It could have been a surname given to a person who had originally lived in Paisley, Scotland and this surname could eventually have been adapted as a forename as did many surnames. Alternatively the word would have been associated with exoticism and beauty, and so would have been deemed a suitable feminine forename.
