About Pocahontas

Go back to names list

While Pocahontas was a real life Native American figure, many most likely know her through Disney’s 1995 film, “Pocahontas”, although it is not a very accurate representation of her life. She is an official Disney Princess. Pocahontas is the daughter of Chief Powhatan, of the Powhatan Indian tribe in Virginia. She is a free spirit with a strong will, and forms a relationship with white settler, John Smith, showing him the wonders of her world. The name Pocahontas is most likely a childhood nickname that referred to her spirited nature, and also why it means “playful one”.
