Annabel is an English combination of the name ‘Ann’, and the French word ‘belle’, meaning ‘beautiful’. As such, the meaning is ‘God has favoured me’ + ‘beautiful’. It first came into use in Scotland in the 12th century, but didn’t make further inroads until the 19th century.
