Tobias is derived from the Hebrew ‘Tobiah’, meaning ‘God is good’. It is a fairly common name for Bible characters, but in the Middle Ages it was mainly associate with the tale of ‘Tobias and the Angel’. In this story, Tobias acquires the services of archangel Raphael as a traveling companion, who sees him safely home with a cure for his father’s blindness.
