After bringing you the most popular baby names from each month on BabyNames.co.uk we thought it would be the perfect opportunity to reveal the top baby names across the site from 2012.

We’re going to reveal to you the most popular names by rating in 2012 and your favourite names, there are some surprises and some classic names that remain towards the top of the charts. As always our ratings are out of five.

Name Rating
Niamh 4.53
Maisie 4.53
Libby 4.50
Amelie 4.49
Emily 4.48
Lexi 4.44
Amelia 4.42
Freya 4.41
Hannah 4.39
James 4.38

Yet again we find that the top ten list is dominated by girls names. Do you think there is any reason for this? James is the only boys name to make it into the top ten, hitting the charts at ten, but we know that this classic name is always popular amongst prospective parents. The most popular baby name from 2012 is Niamh, a more unique name, followed closely by Maisie. We thought it was a surprise to see these two names hit the top of our charts. What do you think? Classic girls names such as Emily, Hannah and Amelia also hit the top ten, it will be interesting to see if they make the chart in 2013.

As we do with our month to month charts, here we reveal your favourite names of the year, the ones you add to name lists! This time the boys come to town and dominate our chart, but a girl hits top spot.

Eva hit the top of your favourite names from 2012, but the chart was dominated by boys names with Ethan, Oliver, Leo and Jacob making up the rest of the top five. Whilst it is a surprise to see so many boys names hit the top ten, the fact that your favourite names were all classics was expected. Everyone seems to love names which have survived generations. Do you think we will see any unique names make the top ten in 2013?

2012 was an exciting year for baby names, with both classic and unique names appearing in our charts. 2013 looks like it is already going to be an interesting year, and we can’t wait to bring you the top charts this time in 2014! See you then!
