Top Baby Names in Ireland 2016

Ireland’s Central Statistics Office has revealed the top baby boy and baby girls names of 2016, with James and Emily topping the lists. These match up with the most popular baby names of Northern Ireland, which was released in April.

Four of the top entries for boys names – Jack, Sean, Conor and James – have been in top five since 1998.

Muhammad has seen the most rapid climb in the list of boys names last year and it is also the only new name entry into the top 100 names list. It jumped up 36 place from 119th in 2015 to 83rd in 2016.

Some unique boys names to have made the list include: Anton, Brodie, Cruz, Feilim, Harris and Riain.

As for girls, Emily has been the number one name for six years running.

There were also many more new entries into the top 100 girls names, including: Aria, Harper, Heidi, Matilda, Willow and Zoey.

The two names that jumped up in popularity the most are Willow (up 49 places from 121st to 72nd) and Matilda (up 49 places from 146th to 97th).

Unique girls names to have made the list are: Blake, Indigo, Lucia, Romy, Reidin and Peyton.

One interesting fact that was gleamed from the report shows that parents are more creative with girls names than boys names – there were 4,526 girls names registered last year compared to 3,456 boys names, even though more boys were born in 2016.
