What are the top double barrelled baby names in the UK?

August 22, 2010  |  Filed under: Name popularity  |  Written by:

Double barrelled (or hyphenated) first names – how popular are they, and which names are parents picking?  We’ve been trawling through the 2008 official baby names data from the UK government to find out.

Note: the data we’ve received does not include very rare names – i.e. those only used once or twice.  This is to protect the anonymity of the individuals, and to limit the data a bit too!

As you might expect, double-barrel first names are more common in girls.  6,718 girls in 2008 were given hyphenated names, compared to only 1,094 boys.

Double barreled names

The most popular hyphenated girls name in 2008 was Ellie-May, used 239 times.  For comparison, Olivia was the most popular girl’s name overall, given to 5,317 baby girls.

Moving to boys, the top double-barreled name in 2008 was Tyler-James, chosen by only 32 families.  This trails the leading boys name by some margin – Jack was used 8,007 times in 2008.

  • David

Recently was blessed with a baby girl. Named her Alexis-Morgan.

  • Rachel

My friends daughter is called Charlie-Suzannah or Charlie-Sue for short!! A lovely name!

  • Amber-jade

My name is Amber-jade, I love my name being double barrelled but no one really uses my full name they just use Amber but I would prefer my full name be used :), but when I have a child I will give her or him a double barrelled name :)

  • billie-jean

as u can see i also have a double barrelled name although its very rare but i think double barelled names are lovely and sound really good on females better than on males anyway :D

  • Sarah-Jane

We decided to name our daughter Anna-Louise.

  • Emma

Hi i have 2 little girls both with double barrelled names Ellie-may and Leia-rose i’m now expecting my 3rd girl so the race for a name is on :) x

  • Joleigh-Louise

Hi me and me sister have double barrelled names, mine is Joleigh-Louise and my sisters name is sheree-Rose. sheree has a daughter who’s name is Tiffany-Rose and we all love our name because there uncommon and not herd of but feel free to use them :) <3 xx

  • Izzy

I love double barrelled names and when I have children they wil definitely have them! I like making them up though, using the names’ meanings for inspiration:
    Fia-Louise (Peace-warrior)
    Esme-Ruth (Defender-Friend)
    Lyra-Julliet (Song-love) I wanted this to be love-song, but Julliet-Lyra doesn’t sound as good
    Kayla-Evelyn or Eve(Pure-Light)
    Jade-Elthia (Good-Healer)
    Heidi-Lilly (Noble-Beauty)
I’m a bit of a fan of unusual names :)

  • Marija

As much as I am a fan of Superman, and even more, Smallville… I cannot justify the use of the name Kal-El… So we have little Kal-El’s running round… And why choose his alien name? They have alot to live up to with a name like that aswell. I hope the parents don’t think that their kids will grow up to be Superman.. If anything, why not name your kid Clark?

  • AuntietomylittleLs

My niece has a double barrelled name, and I love it! Her name is Lilly-Mai. It’s gorgeous!

  • http://www.babynames.co.uk/blog/double-barrelled-names-2008/ Jessica Clark

my boyfriends brother has two little girls called Nataile-may and lilli rose and his sister has a girl called skye-louise :)

  • Olivia

Most girls double-barrelled names are too ‘cutesie’ for me. I like Amelia-Jane and Anna-Daisy, but Ellie-Mae and Lacey-Rose and that sort of thing aren’t really me.

I don’t really like the boys. Tyler-James is OK… as are Harvey-James/Thomas-James/Alfie-James. I don’t like the -Lee or -Joe or -Jay names though.

  • Ruby-jo

My name is Ruby-jo it also has poppy on the end. Making it Ruby-Jo-Poppy… but its to long so i say Ruby-Jo… near enoughh everyone calles me Ruby, i dont like it so i say Ruby-Jo you mean! apart from when im in trubble they shout RUBY-JO Here now! :L Funnyy stuff.. i love double barelled names… i LOVE sophia-grace.. i want to be called that!

  • Lilly-May

My name is far by the longest i know off… its, Lilly-May-Sophia-Grace-Catlin-Tee
its stupidly long so i stick to Lilly-May. im neveer called Lilly-May-Sophia-Grace-Catlin-Tee, apart from presentations and mum ALWAYS calles me by my full name. it is really long i know, but it is officaly my first name, i also have a middle name and surname. making my full name Lilly-May-Sophia-Grace-Caltin-Tee Elizabeth Richards! it so long i know, my english teacher calles it me. Not with the middle and surname. and when i have friends over and they call me lilly-may mum goes mental at me and tell me THATS NOT YOUR NAME HOW DEAR YOU TRUINT ME LIKE THAT AND CHANGE IT. once i was grounded for it. I HATE IT

  • Dylan-Luke

i think some d.b. names on boys sound good. I am happy with my name and i was given this in the 90s! Everyone shortens it to ‘Dyl’ or ‘Dylan’ but I do like it when people use the whole name

  • Chloe

I am 19 and my daughter is called Jayden-leigh,it is more common for boys, but it is a pretty name and suits her.. ahe is beautiful :)

I know a lot of girls with hyphenated names as this fad is very popular where I live. Skylar-Rose, Jamie-Rae and Ciara-Leigh. I also know a Carly-Anne and a Megan-Rae. Not many boys have hyphenated names though, I don’t think it’s all that popular for them.

  • Chelsea-cameron blair

We have two girls and a boy, and are expecting #4 in December. This is an old post, but what’s the odds you came up with the name Gracie-Lea (pronounced lee)?? This is our oldest’s name. Our boy is Benjamin David, the baby is Layla-Rose, and I LOVE LOVE LOVE Ellie-Maye for the next girl born… my wife needs some convincing though. lol

  • Amelia

We called our beautiful daughter Lyn-Marie, which a lot of people thought was crazy because I thought of it as a variation on Marilyn (like, Monroe). But we’re happy with our name choice. My little starlet is very much a Lyn-Marie!
