BabyNames.co.uk Top 10 Names for August

This was originally posted on August 4, 2014

With the year becoming set as a classic baby name year, it will be surprising to see any big changes in the top ten as we come into the last few months. That being said there have been a few shocks, and I think that you might look at our top ten highest rated names and wonder if there might be a change.

We love to look at the names which you have rated highest on the site in the past month, and to begin with we will show you that chart. Whilst the traditional names are still very popular, there are a few different names in the mix. As always the ratings are out of 5.

Name Rating  Change
Arnold 3.8  NEW
Grace 3.64  RE-ENTRY
Olivia 3.63  RE-ENTRY
Lily 3.62  RE-ENTRY
Emily 3.56  RE-ENTRY
Matthew 3.55  RE-ENTRY
Ruby 3.52  NEW
Lidia 3.46  NEW
Betsy 3.45  NEW
Aaeiyah 3.4  NEW

Racing to the top of the chart is a new entry, and whilst it is certainly a ‘traditional’ name it is something which is slightly unique.  Arnold is your top rated name in August!  What do you think of this baby name, would it be one that you would choose?  There were also four other new entries into the top 10, with Ruby and Betsy continuing the classic trend, but also Lidia (a slightly alternative spelling to Lydia) and Aaeiyah entering the top 10.

We also had five re-entries into the top 10.  It has to be said that these names are all traditional baby names which continue the trend that we have seen throughout 2014.  Grace, Olivia, Lily, Emily and Matthew all re-entered the chart, Matthew appearing for the first time since last December.  We also look at the names which you decided were your favourites in August.  These names are the ones which you have placed on your name lists, which means it is likely that you chose one of them for your child.

Name Change
Noah RE-ENTRY
Amelia ↑5
Ethan RE-ENTRY
Freya RE-ENTRY
Mia RE-ENTRY
Florence RE-ENTRY
Oliver RE-ENTRY
Ella RE-ENTRY
Elsie NEW
Olivia RE-ENTRY

As you can see there was only one new entry into the favourite chart in August.  This name was Elsie, and it is clearly another nod towards the classic names which are so popular at the moment.  We also only had one baby name remain in the chart, and that was Amelia, rising five spaces to finish second in the chart in August.  The rest of the chart just shows to us that you love your classic baby names and that 2014 will go down in the memory as a year where classic names made their comeback.

With names such as Ethan, Freya, Florence and Olivia all re-entering the chart this month it is clear that the classic trend will continue.  Are classic baby names the kind of names which you will choose for your own child?  Mia joined the top 10 this month, and with Mia making its first appearance since November last year, and Olivia is making its first appearance since March (combining with its reappearance in the top 10 highest rated names too) it is clear that the classics are here to stay.

We’ll see you next month with another round up of your favourite baby names.
