Unsurprisingly, many of the names carry with them a distinctive French influence – 85% of the province of Quebec consider French their dominant language.

The Quebec website actually lists every single name given to a newborn in 2009. There were 9,170 different names given to girls, and 7,818 different names given to boys. This follows the normal pattern we tend to see, with parents getting a bit more adventurous with baby girl names, venturing further off the beaten track. I’ve not had much time to dig through all the names, but did spot one interesting one – a boy called Wendy.
